Strawberry Fields Forever (WIAW)

I have never been strawberry picking.IMG_8036 (1024x682)

OK, Jenn and all you What I Ate Foraged Wednesday farmgirls, I might have been strawberry picking.

I have a vague memory of being in a field with my dad at the local orchard where I grew up, but I am not sure if every memory of picking pumpkins hasn’t formed into that one moment in time. (Apparently I couldn’t care less what I came home with, as long as I got to hang out on a farm.)WIAWstrawberry

Regardless, the only picking of strawberries I do is the picking through every single box of the little red, waffle-knit berries the farmers’  market until I find the most uniformly dark red, not too big, (not already forming jam in the corner) I can find.IMG_20140426_075353

And while $5.00 a box might seem like a lot, when you take into account the insane food taxes in Alabama–oh, and the inevitable superior taste and quality–it’s not all that bad.

Plus, I definitely get my money’s worth.

Those berries make there way into my meals and snacks from morning to night.IMG_8066 (800x533)

Yoplait strawberry cheesecake Greek yogurt mixed into oats, topped with some of those berries and a generous sprinkle of Love Grown Foods Simply Oats clusters was so darn delicious…IMG_8051 (800x533)

…I just had to re-do the combination, although this time with a little crystallized ginger and some Yoplait lemon Greek yogurt.IMG_8140 (800x533)

The yogurt was leftover from the night before, when I had mixed some into plain Greek yogurt for a crazy bedtime snack–IMG_8136 (800x533)

–featuring Wasa light multigrain crackers, dried kiwi, strawberries, more crystallized ginger, and mini chocolate chips.IMG_8134 (800x533)

And just when you thought you had very recently seen the same oatmeal way too many times…here it is again.IMG_8255 (1024x682)

Except with black grapes, hemp seeds, and coconut milk mixed in instead.

My midday meals (and snacks) were blessed with berries as well.IMG_8104 (800x533)

Roasted local beets drizzled with Orange Ginger Coconut Sauce made a perfect side to a black bean burger covered in guacamole yogurt, with jicama ‘fries’ and Asian rice cakes.IMG_8094 (800x533)

Did you know that black pepper is fabulous on strawberries (and clementines)?IMG_8317 (1024x683)

Especially with brown sugar and coffee braised local beet greens alongside some more Asian rice cake puffs with that orange ginger coconut sauce.IMG_8308 (1024x683)

And how about this snack time vanilla sweet potato orange Growing Naturals smoothie topped with some of those local beauties, Love Grown Foods Honey Power Os, and Golden Grahams that I stole from The Professor’s house*?

Did I make an orange banana berry green tea matcha smoothie with chia seeds to take to the tornado shelter?

Don’t know what I’ll do now that they are gone.

Perhaps I’ll have to stick to picking out the dried strawberries from my Costco Fruit & Nut Mix?IMG_7383 (1024x683)

Or, well, I guess I could just buy some more.
