Rudi’s “Say Cheese!” Photo Contest + NorthFace Back (To School) Pack Giveaway

by Sarah on August 10, 2013 · 33 comments

As y’all know, I’m headed back to school once more this month. Instead of a teacher, however, I’m returning to student life–although what that means as a PhD student already appears to be a bit different than my undergrad days of collecting all the Virginia paraphernalia  I could find and squeezing my life into a dorm room.

(Instead I’m squeezing my life into a one bedroom apartment.)

One thing that will most definitely NOT change is my continuing concern over much younger students than I–the elementary school kiddos I used to call ‘mine’--and the food choices offered to them at school.

I’ve always believed in the importance of parental and family involvement in helping kids learn about nutrition and eating well, by either providing healthy food for their children or being aware of what they are being given at school. That’s why I was so excited to learn about Take Your Parents to Lunch Day, a national event sponsored by Kiwi magazine on October 16th.

While I’m not sure Papa Smart will be able to fly down and have lunch with me in the ‘Bama dining hall, I hope many other parents will take the chance to see what their children are being offered at school, and if dissatisfied, work to change it.

Rudi’s Organic Bakery has long been a supporter of childhood wellness, and I was happy to spread the word about yet another wonderful campaign they are working on to promote good nutrition and healthy families.

The company is partnering with the School Nutrition Association and Kiwi Magazine to sponsor a Say Cheese! photo contest in celebration of Take Your Parents to Lunch Day.

Simply take a photo of your kid (or kids) eating their favorite sandwich(es)preferably on Rudi’s Organic Bakery bread–and submit it online.

Pickles and hummus with melted cheese, anyone? No?

if i were a sandwich, i'm pretty sure it would be something weird like this.

On September 30th, five finalists will be chosen, and the photo who receives the most viewer votes will win a $500 Whole Foods shopping spree!

zevia coupon not included.

Unfortunately (but only for this contest), I don’t have kids of my own to photograph,* and I know many of you don’t either.

*It would require a lot of waivers from student parents and abiding by school regulations and all that mumbo jumbo…or jail time.

(And I don’t think that taking a photo of myself tearing into a new bag of bread in “I’m still living in claustrophobic unpacking conditions and may or may not have showered in the past 48 hours” craziness counts.)

No worries, mate(s), because one thing I love about Rudi’s is they send me free stuff sometimesthey love to give stuff away to y’all!

As one can never have too many bags, Rudi’s has offered one of my lucky readers the chance to win a (The) North Face backpack (book bag?). All you have to do to enter is answer two questions for me:

What sandwich would YOU pack in your lunchbox?

i actually pack my camera in this lunch bag. a camera sandwich would NOT be good.

Do you call it a backpack or a book bag?

(I find that when hiking or traveling, it is a backpack. For school it is a book bag.)

not a (the) north face, but my eastern mountain sports imitation.

I’ll choose a winner…some time soon.

I call it a book bag, and I would definitely pack a PB & J in it!

Tracey c August 10, 2013 at 1:37 pm

I call it a back pack and I would pack a hummus, avocado, tomato and goat cheese on a Rudi’s spinach tortilla!

Jasmine A. August 10, 2013 at 1:45 pm

I’m so indecisive when it comes to sandwiches, so I always cut it in half and to half AB&J and half savory, like hummus/laughing cow + veggies + turkey haha. Best of both worlds! And it’s a backpack for me, I’ve never said book bag..

Katie @ Talk Less, Say More August 10, 2013 at 1:48 pm

For me, it’s a backpack no matter when, where or how I’m using it! And my sandwich would either be veggie w/ avocado or pb&j/pb&banana. YUMMY!

sarah @ sarah learns August 10, 2013 at 3:43 pm

i always call it a backpack! i can’t believe i’m about to say this, but i’m *gasp* jealous of you going back to school! despite the he** that was grad school (seriously, you will do amazingly though – i’m sure of it), this is the first september in approximately 22 years that i won’t be starting up classes again. that is so.freaking.sad. to me.

one of my favorite sandwiches EVER to pack in my lunches is pickles, cheese, & mustard. sounds kinda strange, but it’s delicious!

Anne Weber-Falk August 10, 2013 at 4:40 pm

When I was younger we called them book bags but now that I have children of my own, we call it a back pack. Shrug? When it comes to sandwiches I am totally digging hummus and guacamole on whole wheat or good grainy toast. Yum!!!

Anne Weber-Falk August 10, 2013 at 4:40 pm

P.S. I’m very excited for you!

Caroline August 10, 2013 at 5:17 pm

Wait, I love the idea of getting parents to go to lunch with kids and see what they’re being served! I agree that this is something incredibly important that we all need to be aware of. As for you questions, I’m a PB&J kind of gal, but strawberry jam, NOT grape jelly. And I don’t know, I kind of switch around. My mom used book bag all the time growing up, so that definitely rubbed off on me, but I think I use backpack more often. Speaking of which I’d LOVE to be able to have a North Face backpack. Happy back to school!!

Ashley August 10, 2013 at 8:57 pm

I would pack a turkey sandwich on whole wheat with cranberry sauce – my favorite! And I call it a backpack :)

Lindsay @ Health Foragers August 10, 2013 at 8:58 pm

Cream cheese and olive sandwich! Mmm mmm good.

And definitely a book bag – that is what it carries.

Unless it is carrying something else, like clothes or beach items, and then I would call it a backpack.

Hmmm . . . interesting question.

Catherine @ Happily Ever Crafter August 10, 2013 at 10:53 pm

I usually go classic with homemade whole wheat bread, a little olive oil mayo, turkey slices and provolone cheese. I do like hummus and other things but the turkey/provolone is my go-to sandwich.

I never really thought about whether I call it book bag or backpack until you brought it up. I think I’m with you as far as backpack for a trip but book bag for ya know…books. Haha.

Carol B August 10, 2013 at 11:06 pm

Backpack for both instances. :) Peanut butter (or other nut butter) and bananas!

Cari August 10, 2013 at 11:30 pm

I would pack a sandwich with tempeh, granny smith apple, onion, sriracha, kale, and a melted daiya cheddar slice :) and it’s DEFINITELY a backpack for me!

Harmony B August 11, 2013 at 7:03 am

a PB&J with bananas sandwich
I call it a book bag

TIffany K August 11, 2013 at 7:20 am

I call it a back pack…but like you I am headed back to school this year, so maybe I’ll start calling them book bags?? And my favorite sandwich ever is grilled cheese (daiya) with tomatoes…

Kim August 11, 2013 at 7:37 am

Love your site !!- I am fairly new – a big fan of Katheats- her site led me to you !! My all time favorite sandwich to pack this time of year especially- is a simple FRESH tomato , mayo , alittle salt and pepper ~ [ actually I pack all ingredients and assemble at work to prevent getting too soggy]
I have always called the pack a back pack-

Tricia August 11, 2013 at 8:55 am

Turkey on whole wheat with lettuce and i call it a backpack unless you have books in it then its a book bag :(

marie August 11, 2013 at 9:12 am

1. I’d pack smoked turkey with swiss and avocado on homemade whole-grain bread.

2. It’s definitely a backpack!

Miss Polkadot August 11, 2013 at 9:21 am

Not being a huge sandwich person – does that make me a bad blogger? – I’d go with a whole-wheat tortilla spread with hazelnut butter, my mum’s homemade strawberry jam [she has yet to notice I snagged the last jar] and (!) a sprinkling of sea salt. It adds so much and brings the flavours to a whole new level. Just so the sandwich part is somehow included still I’d pack a dessert [why, yes, that’s necessary after a a sandwich/tortilla, too] of banana slices sandwiches sandwiched with almond butter.
Oh, and it’s a backpack for me. I like the idea of using it as a camera back …

Danielle @ It's A Harleyyy Life August 11, 2013 at 6:37 pm

call me old school… but pb&j!

Kari M August 11, 2013 at 10:16 pm

Definitely a backpack. I’d pack a turkey, cheese & avocado sandwich.

Kels August 11, 2013 at 10:49 pm

I just posted the elementary lunch calendar in my classroom today. Pizza, nuggets, burgers. Of course I thought of you! But I’ll stay off my soapbox and just say that my favorite is the classic pb&j! And I call it a backpack (and sing “backpack, backpack” in my head like Dora the explorer..)

Ashley P August 12, 2013 at 7:05 am

I always pack the typical PB&J, although sometimes I add banana slices to it! And definitely backpack.

Ashley R August 12, 2013 at 2:26 pm

It’s definitely a backpack, cuz it goes on your back!! :) And any sandwich is good, but I prefer a chicken salad sandwich of some sort, maybe a PBJ sometimes. :)

Carla August 12, 2013 at 3:05 pm

I too am going back to school for graduate school this fall… Sigh, I have back to school blues although I’m excited for what I will be learning. So, I plan on stuffing my lunchbox with a sandwich combo of whole wheat bread, deli ham, pickles, hummus, red onion, banana peppers, and spring mix salad… with red wine vinegar [that’s right. straight up vinegar] to dress it. Mm. And, it’s definitely a bookbag for me, except if I’m hiking.

Katie M August 12, 2013 at 9:25 pm

A turkey sandwich on honey whole wheat bread (with lettuce, green peppers, and cucumbers) would be the key element found in my lunchbox.

It’s a backpack…even when it’s worn on one shoulder (Much to the chagrin of my mother)!

Angela August 13, 2013 at 3:24 am

I would pack a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and it’s always a backpack.

Sara M August 14, 2013 at 6:39 am

I’m the most boring sandwich eater ever. I’d pack Turkey and Swiss on Whole Wheat. I go back and forth with bookbag and backpack….I have no idea why I use both!

Tera August 15, 2013 at 11:34 am

Tuna sammich :) and I call it a backpack.

Lele August 16, 2013 at 5:37 pm

My favorite sandwich is hummus and avocado. And it’s a backpack, cmon!

Ben August 16, 2013 at 11:09 pm

I say backpack, and a PB&J would go in mine.

Katie August 20, 2013 at 12:59 pm

I love a good lettuce wrap with avocado, sprouts, turkey, and hummus! It’s also good on fat slices of bell peppers. (No bread for me….)

I call it a backpack, never a book bag.

Heather @ Kiss My Broccoli September 29, 2013 at 2:44 am

Since I’m catching up and I see you’ve not chosen a winner just yet, I’m gonna go ahead and gamble with an entry! 😉 First, it’s definitely a backpack and secondly….hmmm, what sandwich WOULD I pack? Oh the choices!! I would say a BBQ tofu PB&J since it’s my favorite, but those are better served toasty warm. Think I’ll have to go with my little Greek creation from a few months ago…turkey, lettuce, tomato, red onion, cucumber, sprouts, and dijon mustard (of course), feta, and a little thrown together on the fly olive tapenade! 😀
