Becoming a B.R.A.T. [#WIAW]

by Sarah on March 13, 2013 · 21 comments

On Monday, I had a horrible run. I had to stop and walk more than I ever have, and it was mainly due to an incredibly upset stomach. It might have been due to my recent consumption of eggs, or perhaps the multiple dips into my coconut butter that came following this yummy after school snack.

raspberry vegan protein whipped cream w. strawberries, carob date fondue, love grown granola, and peanut butter balls

Whatever it was, that stomachache didn’t go away. In fact, it only got worse. Let’s just say I woke up every hour after midnight for a mad dash to, well, take care of business.

Morning brought a quick trip to the drug store on the way to school for these pink poppers, …and my adopting of the B.R.A.T. Diet for most of the following day.As I’m sure you are aware, Jenn (and anyone else who has ever suffered tummy trouble), the B.R.A.T. Diet is composed of four foods thought to help sooth digestive nightmares back into blissful dreamland. [Which, to me, is a place where vegetables actually sound appetizing.]

i ate bananas and leftover white bread crusts (from my roommate's tea sandwiches) soaked in almond milk when i SHOULD have been in dreamland. much better than it looks.

Bananas

goat's milk yogurt on rice of the puffed variety w. bananas + cinnamon

Rice

rice (cakes) in applesauce mixed w. vanilla chai hemp protein and more bananas

Applesauce

ginger-infused oats w. applesauce, bananas, and candied ginger

Toast

avocado toast w. cinnamon + honey

Until about 8:30 on Tuesday night, the only thing green I could even think about consuming was avocado, in both straight ‘schmeared‘ form, and in the second giant batch of Citrus Avocado Dressing I’ve made in a week.I dove into a bowl of veggies later on…and whether or not that was a wise decision…or if my stomach will be throwing another B.R.A.T.(ty) tantrumremains to be seen.

maybe it should be the silent g. (as in B.R.A.G.T.)

But I’ve got the ginger tea ready just in case.

Awwww! Hope you are all better tomorrow. Did you know they added yogurt to the BRAT diet? My mom kept trying to feed it to me when I got the stomach flu, but I couldn’t stomach a milk product until 3 days into recovery. I think the probiotics were the good thing.

Yikes! Hope you’re feeling better. Killer stomach aches and lack of sleep are not a good combo. Hang in there!

Urgh. I hope you get to feel better. I’m sure you’ll be craving some veggies in no time!

I feel the exact same way when I try to eat eggs. I have an allergy, but with my healing diet I’m supposed to “challenge” foods like eggs that I’ve had previous problems with. The last time I tried them I made several mad dashes myself for the following days. Many in the late hours of the night when I had to crawl down the bunk bead in my college dorm room :(

I am a bit scared to try eggs again, actually. I think I’ll wait until the weekend so I won’t be scared of having to miss work. Of course, maybe I’d rather do that than miss the weekend?

I’d be a little scared too, but if you are wanting to try them out again, maybe start off small with just the yolks. If you are having a reaction to the eggs, egg yolks are the least allergenic part. Most people just have problems with the whites. Good luck!

Boo, you being sick totally sucks :( . Dear pink poppers and BRAT diet please help Sarah recover as soon as possible, thankyouverymuch!

Hope it makes you feel at least a tad better when I’m saying you make even BRAT look like a fancy-shmancy way of eating.

I was, in fact, rather impressed with my ability to stay creative while being a B.R.A.T. ;)

Oh goodness. I’m sorry! That happened to me last week when I had a string cheese for the first time in months (first time having any cheese in months) and I had no idea why my tummy was hating me so much!
Hope you’re feeling better soon! It’s tough to ease back into those foods we’ve missed so much!

I realize my last comment I was sort of being a (brat), so sorry. That being said please don’t take this the wrong way, but I thought the brat diet was supposed to be exclusively those four foods? I know avocado and almond milk wasn’t what caused the upset, but I wouldn’t think eating that while sick would be very helpful..or maybe it’s just that I know it wouldn’t work well for my digestive system…funny how things can vary so much person to person. Feel better soon!!

PS yogi’s stomach ease and Eater’s Digest (can’t remember the company) are both incredible for stomachaches. i’m a connoisseur of tummyaches.
