Merry Christmas, my little Smarties!
I hope everyone has had/is having,/did have a merry, jolly, full-of-good-cheer yuletide….or at least enjoyed the day off from work if you are not of the Christian persusasion. Mine has been very relaxed, and I’m currently trying to get over a nagging head cold with my feet up on an ottoman and Love Actually in the background.
Although maybe taking the time to blog on a holiday is taboo (?) I figured a little reflection on the holiday was in order…so I’m finally completing one of the many surveys I have marked in the past few months to promote a little Christmas-related narcissism. Enjoy!
1. Egg Nog or Hot Chocolate?
Neither. I’ll take a holiday blend cup of coffee every time.
[As evidenced by the fact that these canisters were part of my Christmas surprises from Mama Smart.]
Unless we are talking about Eggnog Nutty Butter of course.
2. Does Santa wrap the presents or put them under the tree?
Growing up celebrating Christmas twice meant it was inevitable you learned Santa doesn’t quite do the same thing at every house. When Santa visited Mama Smart, Santa wrapped none of his presents, and took MUCH more time filling stockings than worrying about anything else. Apparently this was because the elves were busy wrapping the presents for Papa Smart’s house…and perfecting their ability to sign ‘Santa’ in his handwriting. [Curiouser and curiouser…]
3. Colored lights on tree/house or white?
If you had asked me even two years ago, I would have looked at you like you were crazy for even thinking to ask that question, because obviously the only correct choice is white lights, with candles in the windows. However, as I have learned to appreciate Papa Smart’s haphazard lighting of our front bushes–occasionally he gives up halfway from the top–and added Stepfather Smart’s holiday decorations to our old ones, I’ve come to find that I’m really just a fan of twinkly lights in general.
4. Do you hang mistletoe?
Nope, but then again, I’ve never had anyone around during the holidays that I would want to kiss underneath it. 😉
5. When do you hang up your decorations?
I don’t decorate! I have never quite been in a position to ‘nest,’ so I love going to people’s homes who DO decorate!
6. What is your favorite Christmas dish (excluding dessert)?
For some reason I always think about my Grammie’s homemade Chex Mix—why does it always taste better when SHE makes it???—and Papa Smart’s Yorkshire pudding. Oddly, I haven’t had them in YEARS…but they still make me think of Christmas.
7. Favorite Christmas memory as a child?
Gathering with my cousin’s on my MawMaw and PawPaw’s bed and having our stockings brought to us before we went downstairs to get our presents from under the tree.
is was on your Christmas wish list?
I am a failure at Christmas lists…finally I end up poking around the internet and sending links to my parents of things I want. Like Pyrex storage.
9. Do you open gifts on Christmas Eve?
I recall being allowed to pick out just one to open when we got back from church on Christmas Eve, but the past few Christmases have been so scattered–twice I was in foreign countries away from my family–that I think we lost that tradition.
10. How do you decorate your tree?
As I mentioned above, I have yet to have my own tree. Although, I must say this question is a bit confusing…how would anyone decorate their tree? ‘I wrap lights around it and set hooks on branches, making sure the heavy ones are on thicker branches.’???
11. Snow. Love it or dread it?
It is pretty at first, but once you have to deal with it? s-‘NO’-w thank you….
12. Real tree or fake tree?
Real tree! In fact, Papa Smart used to get a tree with the roots still on and stick it in the living room in a wheelbarrow. Then, he’d plant it. We have three or four outside of our house from when I was young.
13. Do you remember your favorite gift?
Nope! I have a flashback to being really excited about getting the very first NOW compilation…
I like gifts you weren’t expecting, but find to be perfectly suited to you, like this year’s Pippa Middleton book.
14. What is the most important thing about Christmas for you?
I would say family, but we are usually all together more often on Thanksgiving, so I am going to do the non-traditional thing here and say hearing everyone singing Christmas carols in church. It is really the time I feel most filled with the Christmas spirit.
15. What is your favorite Christmas dessert?
Without fail, every year,
Mama Smart Santa puts Hershey Kisses in the toes of our stockings. Does that count?
16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?
We don’t have too many any more, to be honest. Blame it on marriages, divorces, remarriages, trips abroad, and just plain growing up, but it has been awhile since our family–immediate or otherwise–has been all together on Christmas. This year we rekindled the ‘tradition’ of going to the movies, though.
17. What tops your tree?
I think a star? Obviously, it isn’t that important to me.
18. Do you prefer giving or receiving?
Guess what? I LOVE getting presents, and I’m not ashamed to say it.
19. What is your favorite Christmas song?
This is not an easy question to answer, as I believe Christmas songs fall into a number of categories. If we don’t sing ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’ in church, I feel a tragic loss…and ‘O Holy Night’ makes me a bit teary on occasion.
Contemporary favorites include cheesy pop songs…most notably ‘My Only Wish This Year’ by a still-dancing-in-the-halls-of-high-school Britney Spears, ‘What Christmas Means to Me’ by still-looking-like-girls Hanson, and ‘Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays’ by whatever-happened-to-JC-Chasez *NSYNC.
Oh, and if you’ve never heard ‘Baby Jesus is Born’ by Garth Brooks…well you have been missing out on a crucial piece of gospel chior meets country twang glory.
20. Candy Canes. Yum or Yuck?
The only way I like my candy canes are crushed up and attached to chocolate (bark). You know what is REALLY gross? Candy canes flavored like CHERRIES.
21. Favorite Christmas movie?
Any made-for-ABC-Family-or-Lifetime romantic comedy. The Twelve Dates of Christmaswas a particular favorite.
22. What do you leave for Santa?
Nothing now. We used to leave cookies, of course.
23. Do you have a Christmas morning tradition?
Not anymore, but we used to wait upstairs and have our stockings brought to us first before running down to the tree.
24. Do you prefer to shop online or at the mall?
Online! The mall stresses me out on a normal day…so you can imagine what might happen on a holiday.
25. Christmas letter or card?
I’m a little confused by this. Is this asking whether I like cards with pictures or letters with updates? Or if I send either of them? I love to recieve any form of real mail. I do not send either. (Oops.)
Merry Christmas to ALL…
…and to all a GOOD NIGHT!
