Yes, folks, I found my foodie home. And it is called Food Heads. The name really doesn’t give you any sense of what you will find when you stumble upon* this quaint house-turned-restaurant.
*Or are told by your friend Rebecca that you must eat there or you are doing yourself a grave injustice.
I honestly cannot explain it to you, but I walked into this little restaurant, with its mismatched tables and chairs, and it’s outdoor seating with umbrellas and adorable oilcloth table covers…
…I felt a sense of rightness with the world.
Just when I thought I’d never find a cute, quirky sandwich shop (not a taco shack that happens to sell sandwiches, but a shop devoted to the sandwich-soup-and-salad combination), I was bombarded with a chalkboard menu….
…and I knew I had found my foodie home.
I may or may not have swooned while reading the menu. (What is it about the words “Half Sandwich-Half Soup Combo that makes my heart happy?)
And then there was crushed ice. My heart skipped a beat. Just a little.
Mugs and…yes, those WOULD be back issues of every food magazine in existence.
I, of course, found one to peruse. I couldn’t have been happier if I’d just been given the entire cookbook section of the largest bookstore in the world to peruse at will.
(I may have also found three recipes I wanted to make. And then accidentally taken the magazine with me out of the restaurant. Oops.)
I met Miss Rebeccamendations for lunch, as it IS one of her favorites, and she was the one to tell me about Food Heads in the first place. She had ordered the Salmon Salad Salad (salmon salad…on a salad….get it?) the weekend before, and went for it again because it was that good.
It was an oil-and-vinegar-based salmon salad—no mayo—and it had the sweet bite of apple in there. Amazingly delicious.
But I…well I went for a combo. (I mean, for the commitment phobic foodie, you need a combo option or you will definitely NEVER make up your mind.)
That would be a half-sandwich-and-soup, with INCREDIBLE house pickles on the side. (I wanted a whole plate of those pickles…as I’m sure you could guess.)
I ordered the Grilled Chicken & Eggplant on buttery toasted (and delicious—I could have bought a whole loaf) multigrain bread, with spinach, tomato, goat cheese, and a blackberry balsamic vinaigrette.
I couldn’t resist trying the Green Chile Chicken Posole…and I’m glad I didn’t fight the urge.
Not only was it a great meal (with incredible company and conversation—-we closed the place down*), but I was able to get a discount thanks to my GoLocalAustin card! [This had mysteriously appeared in an envelope addressed to me at my house...for FREE! Score!]

I will feel slightly better when you start photo-ing pics of the "cold" (by my South Florida girl standards) weather.
Only thing I don't miss.
